The line-up of the international music festival Laima Rendezvous Jūrmala is joined by another striking international name – on 26 July, on the traditional closing gala evening, the stage of Dzintari Concert Hall will once again welcome the Polish vocalist with a four-octave range and an uncompromising stage presence, Michał Szpak. His appearance at the festival last summer was remembered as one of its most emotionally charged moments, and his return is awaited with particular anticipation for every one of his performances at Dzintari invariably becomes an especially vivid stage event.
Michał Szpak is today one of the most distinctive vocal personalities in contemporary Polish music – a Eurovision 2016 finalist who represented Poland in Stockholm with Color of Your Life, taking eighth place and firmly inscribing his name on the international stage. Before Eurovision he had already finished second in the inaugural season of the Polish X-Factor (2011); his 2015 debut album Byle być sobą, dedicated to his mother who passed away that year, was certified double platinum and became one of the defining Polish pop releases of the decade. His second album Dreamer (2018) debuted at number one on the Polish charts, while 2023’s Nadwiślański mrok – an eclectic record fusing rock, industrial textures and electronica – marked a bold artistic turn and a definitive step beyond the industry’s accustomed framework.
In recent years Szpak has also established himself as one of Poland’s most recognised vocal authorities: he has just completed his sixth season in the coach’s chair on the television show The Voice of Poland, and the vocalist team he has mentored has, over the seasons, produced several leading Polish performers – among them Krystian Ochman, who went on to represent Poland at Eurovision 2022. At the same time, the artist articulates a clear civic stance – on his concert tours he draws attention to ecological matters and calls for the protection of endangered species, and in 2022, in response to Russia’s full-scale war in Ukraine, he dedicated the single Halo wodospad to everyone for whom music can offer even a brief moment of light. He is currently touring extensively with his Live Session programme – a distinctive format in which his voice unfolds across its entire range alongside an outstanding band, turning each performance into a genuine event.
Michał is one of those rare artists who doesn’t sing notes — he sings truths. His voice carries exactly what he feels in that moment, and the room catches it the very same second. We are thrilled to welcome him back to Dzintari. – Laima Vaikule
